Help Us Solve a
Family History Mystery:

Judson Ellsworth Hodges

In December 2019, the Wallace Memorial History Room received a mysterious package from an anonymous donor in Jefferson, North Carolina. It contained a framed Roll of Honor certificate (shown on the right) from 1918 for Judson Ellsworth Hodges of Larchmont School. The donor wrote that the certificate was purchased at a sale in southwest Virginia.

Our research determined that the Hodges family lived in Brunswick Park in 1918 when young Judson attended Larchmont School. He was in 3rd grade when he received his certificate. Judson’s parents were George Wesley Hodges, a tugboat captain, and Mary Elizabeth Treakle. Judson had three brothers (Maynard, George, and Charles) and one sister (Ethel). He was born on September 14, 1909, died on October 17, 1989, and is buried near his parents at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Judson Hodges was married 3 times and had a son, Judson Hodges, Jr., who was born in 1941 when the family lived in Richmond.

We are looking for relatives of the Hodges family who would welcome and appreciate this piece of their family history. If you have information, please email us at nchs.wallaceroom@gmail.com or call us at 757-410-7152.
